The American Legion District Seven presented awards Sunday, March 14, in Church Point at the district meeting.
Commander Eric Kuyper said the Alvin L. Nevils American Legion Post 244, Kinder, was recognized for its efforts as a post this past year with several awards.
Kuyper received the M.C. “Mike” Gehr Blue Cap Award, a prestigious award funded by the Gehr family and awarded annually on the district and state levels to a member who works hard.
The rules and history for the award state “almost every post has a hard-working, dependable and volunteering member who has served his/her post for a number of years and is deserving of being nominated.”
Every year, each of the eight districts in the state select a Blue Cap Award recipient. Then the state-level honoree is chosen from the eight district winners. The post in Kinder is part of the seventh district in the state composed of Beauregard, Allen, Evangeline, St. Landry, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, Acadia and Cameron parishes.
Kuyper, who was recognized on the organization’s Facebook™ page, said, “Thanks, but the team and community win this award; not me. I just accepted it.”
At the meeting, Kuyper joined others by receiving the State Commanders coin and National Commanders pin. He received caps from the state commander to share at his next meeting.
