Monday, December 12, will be a milestone for Margie Beeson of Oakdale. She turns 100 years old.
Beeson, a longtime resident of Pineville where she workd and retired from Pinecrest State School, moved to Oakdale to reside in senior apartments.
The mother of three, her daughter, Jeri Fisher Saia claims her Beeson wears her out. “She enjoys going to Wal-Mart to shop or anywhere else if anyone takes her. She wears me out.”
Two of Beeson’s children are still living. Jeri is 76, and Ron is 79. Her second son, Hank, died about a year-and-a-half ago. He was 22 months older than Jeri, who recalls her mother often dressed them alike as twins when they were young because they were so close in age. She was married twice and outlived both men. She had a sister who lived to be 96 and one who lived to be 93. Her mother lived to be 95, but Jeri said all of her siblings are gone now. She was the youngest of her siblings.
Beeson loved to sew and crochet as a younger person. She also liked to cook which she still does. “She cooked her lunch today,” Jeri said. “She likes to make lemon pie. She makes her own crust.”
Jeri said her mother is still mobile usually using a walker in the house and a cane outside the house. Her memory is really good and often remembers things Jeri forgets.
“She remembers things way back.”
She said her mom takes frequent naps. When she was younger, Jeri said her mother liked to read, but she said her hands are not steady enough for her to read. However she said her mother still reads her Bible.
Because of Covid-19, the family will be having a small celebration for Beeson’s big day. Jeri said her son’s birthday is the day after her mom’s birthday. She said Beeson’s grandson was born at approximately 12:01 a.m. on December 15, just missing sharing his birthday with his grandmother. Her grandson lives in south Louisiana and will be 53 on Tuesday.
Beeson has six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
“We’re amazed at all she’s doing at her age. I asked her if she wanted to take a ride for her birthday into the country where we were born and raised,” Jeri said. She said her daughter would be taking them on the drive to see the area where they grew up. (The area is Breezy Hill which is north of Pollock. Jeri said she and her siblings went to school in Georgetown. She said both her father and grandfather drove a bus in that area.)
Happy birthday Miss Margie!
(Note: Jeri shared after the interview she went to the pharmacy for her mother’s medicine. They asked for her mother’s birthday and she said, “12-14-20.”
Laughing she said the clerk tried to input the birthday and said something wasn’t right cause the computer was not accepting the date. Finally the young lady understood it was 1920 and not 2020. She said the clerk said ‘oh’ as understanding occurred.
