An accident in Calcasieu Parish killed two people Sunday, May 8.
Louisiana State Police, Troop D, reported Corina Anne Fontenot, 48, of Basile, and Michael C. Vidrine, 38, of Eunice, were killed when a two-vehicle crash occurred on state Highway 27 on top of the Choupique Bayou Bridge in Calcasieu Parish.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2010 Buick Lacrosse, driven by 78-year-old Charles W. Wright of Hackberry, was traveling south on Highway 27, at approximately 4:15 p.m. At the same time, a 2007 Ford Focus, driven by Fontenot, was traveling north on Highway 27. For reasons still under investigation, Wright’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck the Ford head-on.
Despite being properly restrained, Fontenot sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The rear seat passenger, Vidrine, was not restrained and sustained fatal injuries. The front seat passenger in Fontenot’s vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Wright and his passenger, who were properly restrained, sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
Troop D has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 12 deaths in 2020.
