Due to the current outbreak of the Caronavirus all public schools in Allen Parish and the state were closed beginning March 16, and will resume on April 13, 2020.
Some schools will still provide meals or other essential services. These meals will be provided from Thursday, March 19, to Friday, April 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Oakdale High School for Oakdale and Elizabeth students; at Oberlin High School for Oberlin and Fairview students; and Kinder High School for Kinder and Reeves students. This is a pick up service only and pick up will take place in the school driveways where the buses drop off students at each school. On Fridays a breakfast to go meal will be provided for the weekend.
Students will not be required to make up the missed days at the end of the year.
After reaching out to APSB Superintendent Kent Reed, the paper learned there have been a few resources offered to parents during the closing of the schools.
Reed stated, “our parish supervisors have put together a list of resources/ supplements that are grade appropriate for all students on our Allen Parish website, Facebook page, and individual school websites. We also have an e-mail link on the parish web-site for parents to request additional/supplemental assignments for their children; especially those that do not have access to the internet. All of these supplements are in place to help keep our students from falling behind academically.
“The State Dept. of Education has also waived the minimum number of instructional minutes required to receive credit for an academic course, and we should be receiving information in the near future from the Federal Dept. of Education regarding testing and accountability. Schools are currently closed until Monday, April 13, 2020, and we are unsure if closures will last beyond April 13th.”
