The Allen Parish Genealogy Society will host a speaker event, featuring Shera Broussard LaPoint, on August 6, at 10 a.m. at the Reeves Recreation Complex, 99 Ford St., Reeves.
LaPoint is an expert on DNA in genealogy and crime solving. She will discuss the process of FIGG (which applies the same technology that platforms like Ancestry use to find genetic relatives) and how it helped solve a local murder cold case and how you can help to solve future cases.
LaPoint is originally from Kaplan. She and her husband, Dr. Paul LaPoint Sr., are the parents of four children and grandparents of eight children.
She accidentally became a genealogy and DNA enthusiast after joining Ancestry after the death of her grandfather in 2003. Her passion grew, and in 2015, she did an Ancestry DNA test for ethnicity purposes.
She is active on social media with her Facebook™ group “Our Roots Genealogy and DNA Network”. She is a professional genealogist, The Gene Hunter LLC and a popular genealogical and DNA lecturer. She has been especially focused on helping adoptees and people of unknown parentage find their family. She has completed over 80 such adoptee cases after many families have spent a lifetime trying to figure them out.
Refreshments will be served.
