The Allen Parish School Board held a special meeting on June 24, to bring its professional and support staff salary schedule and job descriptions into compliance with a new state legislation that takes effect at the end of the month on June 30.
The board first rescinded the two items it approved at its May meeting in these areas and then approved the revised 2024-25 professional and support staff salary schedule and revised job descriptions to fall into compliance with Act 3110.
Superintendent Brad Soileau said, it was necessary to approve revised revisions of the two items. He said in the past, the board has always paid teachers for extra duties, outside their contract, like summer school and workshops. The revised salary schedule and job descriptions will allow the board to address items that may not be written in job descriptions.
Soileau said, “In an effort to be in compliance with Act 311 that was approved in June, we had to amend our salary schedule prior to June 30th, and our board approved the amended salary schedule tonight. Additionally, our job descriptions were revised to accurately reflect the responsibilities that our certificated employees were previously performing. Though we had to adhere to a stringent timeline and would have desired more time to deeply study and prepare, we now have a process to compensate our certificated employees when duties performed exceed the responsibilities denoted in our job descriptions.”
The Act 311 addresses pay for work performed outside of teachers’ normal job duties. The board now has a mechanism in place to deal with these types of situations as they are encountered.
In other news, the state also made it law to allow teachers a minimum of 45-minute uninterrupted planning periods daily. It also requires the Ten Commandments to be on a poster-sized display in every classroom, from elementary schools to state-funded universities: More can be learned at https://gov.louisiana.gov/news.
