The Allen Parish Police Jury will meet Monday night, November 6, for its monthly meeting. There will be a public hearing to adjust precinct mergers and voting locations in the parish.
The jury has published maps and charts to educate voters on the proposed changes. At the meeting they will discuss the ordinance “amending the Allen Parish Code of Ordinance as per the results of the 2023 precinct survey.”
The ordinance allows the parish to redistrict voting precincts, changing the configuration, boundaries and/or designation of election precincts in the parish. All of this is being done under the statute dealing with redistricting. It is also will be a cost savings to the parish when the jury combines some of the precincts where low voter turnout has existed.
Under R.S. 18:532.B.(4)(a), the jury “must merge or consolidate all precincts that have 300 or fewer active voters or it shall bear the cost of elections at these precincts,” according to the ordinance the jury will consider approving the final ordinance at its meeting on November 6.
This public hearing will allow for discussion on these changes in precincts and locations before they are actually done. This is the time the parish can input their ideas.
Under the ordinance and statute, the jury has the authority to set the polling locations for the precincts in the parish. The jury also has the final authority whether or merge or consolidate the state approved precinct mergers and consolidations. The reason is because the jury bears all election costs associated with the exercise of voting under R.S. 18:1400.7.
The jury is proposing merging the following precincts with:
•01/04 with 01/01 to be named 01/01.
•01/03 with 01/03A to be named 01/03.
•02/01A with 02/01 to be named 02/01.
•02/02A with 2-2 to be named 02/02.
•02/03A with 02/03 to be named 02/03.
•02/05 with 02/04-C and 02/04-C to be named 02/05
•02/06A with 02/06 to be named 02/06.
•05/02A with 05/02 to be named 05/02.
•05/03 with 05/04F, 05/10, 05/12 and 05/13 to be named 05/03.
•05/04-C with 05/04-O to be named 05/03.
•05/05A with 05/05 to be named 05/05.
•05/07 with 05/09 to be named 05/07.
This means there will be new polling locations for some. The jury will assign the following precincts to polling locations as follows:
