U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) announced the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana will receive $20.3 million as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Sen. Cassidy’s Transportation Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
“Safer roads are one of the many ways the infrastructure bill is improving the quality of life for Louisianans,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Addressing road safety helps us create a better environment for the families who rely on them now and for generations to come.”
The funding through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program will provide federal monies to improve access to the Coushatta Tribe’s reservation. The grant will cover the reconstruction of Powell Road, a two-lane rural collector that serves as the main access to the Coushatta tribal community and administration. It is a high-crash corridor plagued by issues with roadway alignment, site distance, signage that is often missing or improperly located, absent pavement marking, and insufficient recovery areas.
