Avenue of Flags to be on display at Kinder McRill
The Kinder Cemetery Association (KCA) will present its 27th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at Riley Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 315 N. 14th Street, Kinder.
The association’s annual Avenue of Flags also will be on display in the Kinder McRill Memorial Cemetery, 1610 Kinder Cemetery Road, Kinder. The cemetery currently has 168 veterans interred, including southwest Louisiana’s only Medal of Honor recipient buried locally, First Lieutenant Douglas Fournet, killed in action during the Vietnam War.
The KCA invites everyone to join them in paying tribute to all who’ve made the supreme sacrifice in America’s wars from the Revolutionary War to the present time. You’re invited to view the inspiring display of the Avenue of Flags in the cemetery on display beginning Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27, (weather permitting).
Eric Kuyper, Commissioner, Louisiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Captain US Army (Retired) will deliver the Memorial Day address.
In the tradition of Civil War times, young flower girls from the community will place fresh flowers on a symbolic grave.
Southwest Louisiana Chapter 215, Vietnam Veterans of America, will serve as Color Guard and Honor Guard.
A Roll Call and Tolling of the Bell will be conducted for the veterans buried or memorialized in the cemetery.
The ceremony will last approximately one hour and will end with a 21-gun salute and the traditional playing of “Taps.”
