Oberlin enjoys Mardi Gras

Posted on February 15, 2024

Oberlin Courir de Mardi Gras

The Oberlin Courir riders came ready to dance and chase chickens.

Here are more scenes from the Mardi Gras in Oberlin. It was a cold morning when Fat Tuesday began. Despite the photo, left, being black and white, you can see the cold morning. On the right, two take time to visit. (Photos by Rebekah Ogea)

Revelers always stop at the Manuel house each year. The late Brian Manuel loved Mardi Gras. Here revelers kneel at his grave site to share a moment in silence and remember  Brian, who loved this time of year. The family still brings biscuits to the revelers at this stop.

Reveler talk

The Oberlin Courir de Mardi Gras rode through the countryside on Fat Tuesday. This is a traditional courir. After parading through Oberlin, the group enjoyed a community gumbo. The public was invited to the dance to hear Kevin Naquin and Cajun Preservation after. At one of the stops during the day, this photo of a conversation between JT Topping, left, and Lawrence Fontenot, right, was taken. The subject must have been some Reveler secrets to catching chickens and begging for coins because Topping has a nice grin. See more photos on Page 10. (Photo by Rebekah Ogea)
