You may meet Dyllon Singleton on the campus of SOWELLA, where he is studying electrician instrumentation, or at his job at Tractor Supply in Oakdale. If you spend a few minutes talking about likes and dislikes, you will learn that Dyllon loves to sing, and country music is his favorite genre.
He’s been singing since he was about five years old. He said as a baby, his dad would sing to him all of the time. The first song he learned was “Midnight Montgomery,” by Alan Jackson.
“I was singing a lot in high school,” he said. “Every where I went, in the shower, in my truck, I sang.
One day, Dyllon went to the Front Porch Pickin in DeRidder and asked them for singing lessons. He said he was singing all the time, so he better learn how to sing.
Recently, Dyllon put those vocal chords to work for an audition on the Voice®, a television musical challenge show on NBC.
He said the process involved completing an application and then picking a date and time for an audition. He said you have one minute and 30 seconds to introduce yourself and sing a verse of your song.
If you haven’t figured it out, Dyllon sang an Alan Jackson song – “Pop a Top.”
“I felt pretty good,” he said of the audition. “I was just really nervous.”
Three days after his audition, he learned he wasn’t picked. He was encouraged to try auditions again next year.
“I’m going to try again,” Dyllon said. He wants to at least make it past the first round of the audition. He thinks next year, he will not be so nervous.
Dyllon didn’t try out for any of the other musical competition shows. He says you have to travel to audition for them, and he doesn’t have that type of money. He’s going to wait until next year’s auditions are held.
Dyllon, 21, is the son of Damon and Kandi Singleton. He is a 2021 graduate of East Beauregard High School.
In the meantime, he’s going to keep singing to his managers. He says he loves to irritate them with songs that he knows they dislike. It’s so annoying.
Good luck and keep reaching for those stars.
