On Monday, January 15, the Alvin L Nevils American Legion Post 244 of Kinder held its first meeting of the 2024 year by honoring members and veterans locally.
This year is the Post’s 80th Anniversary (1944-2024).
“This year we want to honor our members and veterans as much as we can, so we started with a small awards ceremony in January,” said Commander Eric Kuyper.
Kuyper said five awards were presented to the following:
•Law Enforcement of the Year to Voorhies Leger of the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office,
•Fire Fighter of the Year Taylor Jackson, Allen Parish Fire Protection District 4,
•A thank you plaque for 12 years as the prior Post Commander to Lowell Keys 2006-2018,
•Legionnaire of the Year for Post 244 Belt to Joey Haigler, and
•The Lifetime Achievement award to Mike Karam who has been the Post 244 Adjacent for over 20 consecutive years.
The Legion also discussed upcoming events for 2024 and programs for the year and enjoyed a great meal prepared by Voorhies Leger and Bobby Kibodeaux.
