The Reeves Council reviewed the rough draft of plans for a new city hall and police department. Mayor Chris Guillory went over the draft and received recommendations from council members and the police chief. He will be bringing those ideas and changes to the architect.
The group discussed a larger foyer, relocating the electrical system and air conditioner to another area in the building, reducing the parking lot and selecting a shingle roof over a metal roof to save money when construction finally begins on the project.
The Reeves Council heard from Rusty Reeves, who announced construction of the post office, being relocated to the West Allen Water District office in Reeves, should begin in the next three months. The post office was relocated to Kinder after the Reeves location was closed due to damage from a hurricane. The council and other interested parties have been working to bring the post office back to the village.
The town’s audit report for the last fiscal year had to be added to the agenda and was presented to the council. There were two findings including proper segregation of duties, which is often the case in small communities. There is only one person at city hall working, collecting fines and other monies and documenting the daily work. The second involved the police budget exceeding five percent for increased fuel and payroll taxes during the fiscal year. This can be adjusted for the coming year and fixed immediately.
The council learned the paperwork under old business to allow liquor to be sold in the village for a proposed gas station business to be built there is underway. The town’s attorney Chad Guidry is working on drafting the paperwork for the state and the issue should be brought to voters on the April ballot.
In other business, the council approved a JSA (Joint Service Agreement) with the police jury to make repairs to Rodeo Pen Road, which has been washed out due to the amount of rain the area has received.
