The second incident in the parish was reported last week at Kinder Elementary involving a “list.”
Superintendent Kent Reed and Kenney Courville, supervisor: of CW&A, transportation and special services, went to work on investigating the incident, learning more about what is driving these lists and speaking to their principals about educating parents and students.
The week before the Kinder “list,” there was a similar incident reported in Elizabeth. Reed said it appears there is a video game children are mimicking. At Kinder, it involved three eight year old students with a list consisting of nine students. There were no words designating it was a “kill” or “death” list. It involved an “off” list, which in the video game, if you are on the “off” list at the end of the game, your character dies. Reed said the police took pictures of this list, which was reported by a student who was on the list. He said the investigation determined the students acted in an inappropriate way, so all three were removed from campus. An assessment test indicates they were low-risk students, so they will be allowed to return to campus in the future.
Now it’s time to educate students, and parents are being asked to talk to their children. Reed said, “We have to go back to the basics on being good to one another; to be respectful. We have to take this opportunity to educate.”
On campus, Reed and Courville are working with principals, who will work with teachers. He said each campus has a positive team. They are all speaking to children about how to behave, respect one another, what is appropriate, etc. He said it’s important to explain how to act and consequences when it’s inappropriate.
