The Allen Parish Police Jury is working on its reapportionment plan in accordance with Census 2010 numbers. The jury initially introduced five plans at its first public hearing in February. At that time it was decided to pursue one of two plans, either establishing seven jury members (Plan A), which now is in place, or changing to a new plan creating eight members (Plan B).
Jacob Dillehay, administrator parish engineer for the jury, explained if the jury decided to add a juror, it would give the smaller communities, like the Reeves and Fairview/Grant area, a better chance for representation since more of those areas’ populations would be used to create the smaller districts.
There is a second public hearing set for Monday, March 7, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Allen Parish Police Jury meeting room. The jury is expected to make a final decision at its April 11, meeting.
If anyone has any questions, they should attend the next public hearing or contact a juror in advance to discuss the proposals. The plans are on display during business hours at the jury office. Once the jury makes a decision on which plan to adopt, the school board is expected to accept the same plan at its April meeting. However, the school board will still have an option to go in its own direction, if it chooses to do so.
