Several plans were developed for re-districting by Geographic Planning and Demographic Services for Kinder.
After a public hearing, Plan 1 was chosen. Mike Hefner chief demographer, explained the plan will feature four single- member districts and one at-large district. The minority district will remain in District One as in the past. No incumbent will have to run against another with this plan.
Hefner said to keep the minority district, they did have to shift some of the boundaries, because there was a population shift in Kinder between the last two census counts. He said it’s where one lives that affected the boundary changes.
To move forward with the re-districting plan, the council voted to approve a resolution regarding the reapportionment of the boundaries on the above map. At the next meeting, the town should be able to approve the plan.
The town does have a few more months before this process is completed. It must be completed before the next election. Qualifying for that election will begin in July. This re-districting plan will remain in affect for 10 years (after the next census count).
In other business, the town:
•Approved hiring a part-time and full-time dispatcher for the police department.
•Heard an update from the engineer regarding the sewer improvement project.
•Learned the Black History Program sponsored by Latoya Tunwar would be canceled due to the COVID-19 virus.
•Approved minutes from its December 6, meeting.
