A Kinder man is facing murder charges after a month-long investigation, which initially began as a motorcycle accident, was soon classified as a homicide.
On Wednesday, September 29, investigators with the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office made an arrest in the death of Christopher Hebert, 53, of Oberlin. At that time, Michael Patrick, 50, of Cole Road, Kinder, was charged with second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in Hebert’s death.
Initially, the sheriff’s office responded on Friday, August 13, to a motorcycle accident. At the time, Sheriff Doug Hebert III said deputies located the motorcycle accident on Nursery Road, south of Oberlin. Upon arriving on the scene, the sheriff said deputies discovered the body of the victim, but there was no damage to the motorcycle nor any indication that it had been involved in a vehicle crash.
Through the department’s investigation and an autopsy of Christopher Hebert, it was discovered Hebert was shot, and his death was ruled as a homicide. During the autopsy, a bullet fragment from the victim’s head was removed. Also, several .45 caliber shell casings were recovered near the scene.
Detectives learned the victim was parked on the side of the road when he had an encounter with Patrick on Cole Road. At some point during the encounter, investigators believe Patrick shot the victim in the head, resulting in Hebert’s death.
Days later, the sheriff reported Patrick was arrested near his residence on an outstanding bench warrant. He was held until trial. Then on September 29, detectives made an arrest in the case based on their investigation. Patrick was booked into the parish jail on second-degree murder charges. His bond was set at $425,000.
