Organizers of the First Annual Juneteenth Celebration, to be held in Oberlin on June 19, are extending an invitation to all residents to join them for this family-friendly event.
A parade will be held at 10 a.m. in downtown Oberlin. Lineup will begin at the Allen Parish Fairgrounds at 9 a.m. There is no entry fee. Candy will be thrown. (The parade will not allow four wheelers as per the council and town’s guidelines. Cars, trucks, trailers, floats, side-by-sides, dance groups, social clubs, church organizations, horses, etc. will be allowed.)
After the parade, events for the day will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial Park. Activities will include a prayer, guest speakers like Tony Brown from FM 107.5 and Vibe 1110 AM, activities for the kids, live music from Joe Harmon and the Harmonics, DJ BB, food and craft vendors and many agencies will be offering services like health checkups.
Children’s activities will include face painting, bounce houses, sack races, three-legged races, egg races, musical chairs and many more events.
The NAACP will have representatives on site. The SWLA Clinic will be providing health services like onsite blood sugar checks. An educational specialist will be there to discuss diabetes education, and anyone found with abnormal blood sugar will be referred to the clinic for an A1C check.
