The second class of recipients have been named for the Kinder High School Class of 1987 Memorial Scholarship named in memory of classmates.
Haven Buller and Trystan Pope are the recipients of the Class of 1987 scholarship for the year 2021. The scholarship was first offered exclusively to Kinder High School graduates in 2020. These students were selected from a competitive applicant pool. Buller and Pope will each receive a $1,000 scholarship at the Kinder High School Graduation Ceremony.
The Class of 1987 Memorial Scholarship was established in the fall of 2019 by members of the 1987 Class of Kinder High School. The scholarship is named in memory of fallen classmates. The class’ belief in helping others is the reason for this scholarship’s creation.
This year’s scholarship memorialized Angelina Johnson Saenz, a nurse who the class said goodbye to in 2013. “Angelina and I were very close. I look forward to presenting scholarships in her memory to our two deserving students,” said Angela Ortego Holley, a member of the scholarship selections team.
While there were other factors considered, this year’s scholarship recipients indicate plans to follow similar career paths or interests.
Buller plans to major in nursing at McNeese State University in Lake Charles. As a KHS student, she participated in FBLA, Beta, Teens for Christ and Students for Life. In Buller’s words, “I am honored to have been chosen as the recipient of this scholarship. I am thankful for the opportunity to use this scholarship to assist me in my endeavors. Thanks to this award it will be a bit easier for me to do so.”
Pope plans to study pre-medicine at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After college he wants to become a doctor. Pope was a multi-sport athlete who participated in FBLA, Beta and FFA. “Being selected for this scholarship is an honor, and those memorialized by this scholarship will be represented by me with ample eminence. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to advance my education and give back to my community,” Pope said.
The Class of 1987 thanks their scholarship contributors and scholarship selections team members Erica Barnett, John Chandler, Angela Johnson Gordon, John Gordon, Angela Ortego Holley and Gerald Richard.
