Residents who missed the kickoff of the StoryWalk® Kickoff party in Oberlin at the library on Friday, March 26, have until the end of April to walk along the trail at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The event was partnered by the Allen Parish Libraries and LSU AgCenter’s Healthy Communities and SNAP-Ed.
The event’s main focus was to promote the StoryWalk®, which features the story, “Clap Your Hands” by Lorinda Bryan Cauley. The pages of the book were placed along the walking trail, allowing participants to read the story while engaging in physical activity.
“This was a great opportunity for the community to come together and see the benefits of both reading and exercise,” said library director Agnes Guillory.
This unique event, initially created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, places the pages of a book at different intervals along a walking trail. This allows participants to read a story while engaging in physical activity.
First and second graders from Oberlin Elementary attended the event. Students and other attendees were able to participate in activities at different stations. They about nutrition, exercise, and handwashing from LSU AgCenter Nutrition agent, Natasha Johnson, and Nutrition educator, Crystal Prejean. The students were also able to enjoy story time and tour the new library bookmobile
