The community of Reeves is returning to normal life after Hurricane Laura, but the council will be dealing with related issues for some time.
The village’s town hall was destroyed by the hurricane along with the park next door. Mayor Chris Guillory explained the roof on the east side of the hall was pulled back and some water damage was reported inside. Inside the park area, canopies and park equipment were destroyed. Almost all the trees inside the park were down.
“It is completely lost. There’s nothing left,” Guillory said.
The town clerk has been moved to another location for work purposes until the building is repaired, but residents can reach her at 749-2000.
Guillory said repairs will be made to the town hall, but the council does have future plans to build a new hall on the five acres they have on state Highway 190 in a few years.
The council approved two ordinances at the meeting. The first, dealing with an amendment to mobile home ordinance, was not accepted unanimously with Councilman Glenn Durchame voting against the changes. The new changes remove the exception of allowing trailers into the village, 10 years or older. A resident would have to visit city hall for an inspection. Now trailers over 10 years in age will not be allowed into the village.
The ordinance dealing with junk property was unanimously approved and will now include new items such as the removal of junk vehicles and appliances. The village will notify residents of junk items, and if they are not removed, the resident can be fined. If the resident doesn’t dispose of the item properly, the village could do it and charge them for the removal on top of a fine.
Mayor Guillory said residents can contact administration to discuss the new changes, but he said the ordinances will be posted online in about 30 to 60 days with the village’s other ordinances.
In old business, the council gave more time to a resident, who had received a letter in regards to a trailer that needed to be removed. Mayor Guillory said the extra time was given due to the damages from Hurricane Laura.
There was no other business.
