Superintendent Kent Reed said several buildings’ roofs in the parish’s school system will need to be repaired and schools will be closed for the foreseeable future.
“Basically we have leaks across the parish with the exception of Fairview and Reeves where there are more issues,” he explained.
He said they will probably have to develop a plan once all information has been gathered on how to reopen the parish’s schools. However, none of that can be done until repairs are made and electricity is restored to those areas. Once that is done then the parish will have to decide how to proceed.
The roof at Reeve’s gym was damaged during the hurricane, and it rained in the gym. Reed said he wasn’t sure the district could even save the gym floor due to the water damage. In Fairview, the gym’s roof was damaged, but it wasn’t as severe as the damage in Reeves. However, it will have to be repaired. The visitor’s dressing room and storage building next door on the Oberlin Football Field was damaged.
On Monday, Reed said he was meeting with Eric (Cole, maintenance) and Kenney (Courville, CW&A, transportation and special services) to create a list of damages and see what repairs could be made immediately.
In Kinder, Reed said the portable building next to the gym had been damaged.
“Until repairs are made and everything is safe, we can’t go back to school.” Reed said hopefully it would take a couple of weeks, but he said at the moment, it was a day-by-day process. “We’re going to try to reopen as soon as we can.”
