It was a quick meeting for the Kinder Council Monday evening as leaders completed some housekeeping issues.
The council approved Ordinance 864 which will allow the town to continue collecting a one percent sales and use tax which was approved by voters in a special election held November 16, 2019. During the meeting, Michael Holmes, town attorney, explained the election results have to be approved; then the town has to introduce the ordinance to continue collecting the tax. He said election called for the collections to begin July 1, 2021. After the meeting Traci Fontenot, town clerk, explained the ordinance was introduced at the March 2, 2020 meeting, and then the COVID-19 virus shut down government, so the town was completing its housekeeping in the matter.
The town also adopted a resolution to adopt the adjusted millage rates for the tax year 2020. The town will continue to collect the same amount of money, but with increased business, etc. the millage rate did decrease.
Mayor Wayland LaFargue thanked the police jury for its work in the Weatherford Subdivision between Ezebe and Joan streets. He said in a joint agreement, the jury cleaned a section of approximately 200 yards for drainage.
Latoya Tunwar, councilwoman, asked the mayor about the work on 14th Street. He explained that work was performed by the drainage board and completed. Approximately one-fourth of a mile in that area was cleaned up. He said the drainage board would probably come back and poison it. He said they also did a great job.
LaFargue thanked both the jury and drainage board for their assistance. “It looks good,” he said.
The mayor also reported he met with DOTD (Department of Transportation and Development) to discuss crossings for golf carts and side-by-sides. He expects to have more information in the future.
Not present for the meeting were Angie Van Norman, councilwoman, and Police Chief Paul Courville.
