Alvin L. Nevils American Legion Post 244 in Kinder sponsored two weekend events recently to raise funds for roof repairs and provide civic activities for the community.
Commander Eric Kuyper said over 500 people attended the organization’s Anything Over Rice Cookoff on Saturday, June 13. On Sunday, June 14, the veterans were able to retire over 300 flags for the community.
The cookoff raised enough money to cover the repairs on the American Legion Post’s roof. Kuyper said the group has chosen a veteran-owned company from Jennings to power wash the roof, seal it and make some weather damage repairs where needed. He said the fund raiser on Saturday raised more than was needed for the roof repairs, and veterans couldn’t be more pleased and thankful for the community’s support.
Patriot Brothers Meat Processing Plant from Basile captured the first place title in the competition for its Axis Deer Burrito on Top of Spanish Rice. The judges liked the taste and presentation, Kuyper said. This team was led by Ben Fontenot, a retired master sergeant with the Marines. Fontenot donates sausage for the veterans’ annual pancake breakfast each year. Second place went to Living Legends, consisting of Kevin Tyler and Luke Duplechin.
Kuyper said the veterans, who take their civic duties seriously, also shared information about the census from the Kinder Chamber of Commerce and registering to vote. He said Miss Barbara Savant at the Chamber has been encouraging everyone to complete the census. The more information given to the census, the more dollars Allen Parish may qualify for on the federal level. He also said it’s important to vote in elections.
Kuyper said the weekend was beautiful and great. “We want to thank everyone who came out to support the veterans and American Legion. We do all we can do to help the community.” He also hoped the community would continue to support veterans and the American Legion.
The next event on the calendar will be the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, November 7.
