Local captures photos of a sphinx moth

Posted on January 9, 2020

Elizabeth Griffin of Kinder shared these unique pictures of a sphinx moth on her moonflowers. Becky Deshotel of Kinder captured the moment. The moonflower is one of the most romantic plants you can grow in a garden, according to Better Homes and Garden (https://www.bhg.com/gardening/plant-dictionary/annual/moonflower/). The large, trumpet-shaped flowers unfurl in the evening and stay open until the sun rises. It’s also known as the devil’s trumpet, jimsonwee, thorn apple, etc. The Sphingidae are a family of moths (Lepidoptera), commonly known as hawk moths, sphinx moths, and hornworms, according to Wikipedia. It includes about 1,450 species. They are moderate to large in size and are distinguished among moths for their rapid, sustained flying ability. Known as some of the faster flying insects, some are capable of flying over 12 miles per hour.
