The Kinder FFA Forestry team placed first in state competition recently.
Sullivan Fontenot, Kinder’s FFA advisor, said, “We started the year at the parish forestry ranking first, second and fourth out of 15 teams. Jack Robert had the second highest individual score out of 60 participants.”
The students then began competing and winning. Of the 16 teams, Kinder High’s FFA Forestry placed first, second and fourth place at the overall team competition earning them plaques for their efforts in the Individual Skills competition.
There were 64 competitors and some of Kinder’s students were recognized for their scores.
•William Fontenot was first in tree identification.
•Jack Roberts was first in maps and compass and pacing.
•Trevor Cole was first in chainsaw and equipment.
•The Highest Individual Overall placing was Trevor Cole, third of 64.
•Jack Roberts was the High Individual Overall winner of the day.
“Again congratulations to these outstanding students,” Fontenot said.
“Our teams were first and second in the area competition. Team One got second and Team Two got first.”
Jack Roberts had second high man score in saw timber. Trevor Cole had first in tree identification and second in chainsaw. Hunter Pelican was tied for first in map reading and was second high man in compass and passing and third high man overall.
Gabe Courville was second in tree identification, tied for first in map reading, first in chainsaw and was the high man overall in the contest. He received a scholarship in forestry to La Tech.
“At the state competition, we were state champions and sixth of the 20 qualifying competing teams,” he said.
Of the 80 individual participants, Gabe Courville was first in tree identification and map reading. William Fontenot was second High Individual Overall.
Gabe Courville was the Overall High Individual of the day earning him another La Tech scholarship.
At Invitational forestry career development event, Kinder’s FFA ranked first and sixth of 46 Teams. Of 180 participants Cameron Dowies was first in Compass and Pacing, and William Fontenot was the Overall High Individual on the day.
