The Kinder Council heard from different members of the community on upcoming events in Kinder.
Barbara Savant, Chamber of Commerce, announced plans were underway for the holidays to revive the “Hometown Holidays” the way it occurred 10 years ago. In order to do that, she asked business owners to become involved and to spread the word of the upcoming event. She also needs someone to help her with organizing the parade, which will start at 10:30 a.m. She encouraged all interested parties to decorate floats and become involved. There is no cost to be in the parade, which lines up at Kinder High.
She said they will utilize bracelets for the children who want to enjoy the children’s activities allowing for mom and dad to shop. She reminded everyone Rosie’s School of Dance will be performing at this year’s event, which will be observed Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call the Chamber at 337-738-5845.
Other dates on the Chamber’s calender include:
•The grand opening of the Daiquiri Shack of Kinder, on November 9, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The ribbon cutting will be at 11:30 a.m.
•The Allen Parish Library will welcome someone proficient in genealogy on November 12, she said.
•The Kinder Chamber is conducting a barbecue burger sale on November 14, from 10:30 to 11:30 for $7 each. She encouraged the community to support the Chamber and to call in orders at 337-998-1168. “We will deliver!”
•Savant said a blood drive will be conducted at the hospital on November 15, from 12:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
•The next Chamber meeting will be at Roy’s Catfish Hut from 12 to 1 p.m. on November 30.
•And finally, the Allen Parish Fire Department District #4 Community open house on January 9, 2020, at 5:30. There will be free gumbo, fun, games and live fire demonstrations.
Dexter Hamilton was present to discuss a project with Jerome and Leslie Karam – The 25 days of Christmas Contest. To participate, one must live in Kinder and submit a 150 word essay by November 25. They will begin accepting essays on November 9th, and it must reflect on how you would make Kinder better or someone’s life better. The project was created to inspire, motivate and challenge the community. The goal is to promote unity and kindness.
On November 26, the Karams will give $350 to the essay chosen that day as the winner. Then they will add $10 a day until December 18. So on November 29, the winner will receive $360 and on November 30, $370. On the 20th day, December 17, the winner will receive $550. And then the prize will increase by $50 each ay until the 24th of December. So on December 18, the winner will receive a prize of $600, $650 on the 17th, and $700 on the 18th. On December 21, the 24th day of the contest, the winner will receive $750. On the 25th day, December 22, the winner will receive $1,000.

Police Chief Paul Courville’s report for October including handling one assault, one burglary, four controlled dangerous substances, three damaged properties, two stolen vehicles and 11 thefts.
In other business:
•Michael Holmes, town attorney, reported on changes to the state statute concerning golf carts and UTVs on the streets. The town is studying changing its present ordinance. More information will be shared with the council either at the December or January meeting.
•Mayor Wayland LaFargue share information concerning Kinder’s one percent sales tax renewal which generates approximately $550,000 per year. Funds are used for constructing, acquiring, improving, maintaining and operating any work of capital improvement for the town. Funds from this sales tax are presently used to pay for the $1.3 million to widen streets in town and $6 million for a sewer project. If renewed, the tax will help fund a $3.3 million project to overhaul and renovate the wastewater treatment plant in order to stay in compliance with DEQ regulations.
