WESTLAKE- As the last note of the National Anthem was struck, the public address announcer advised the homecoming crowd the game between Oakdale and Westlake was in a lightening delay. Two hours later as lightening was still visible, it was announced that the game was cancelled.
“We wanted to play as much as anybody,” said head Oakdale coach Destin Dieterich. “I hate the fact we couldn’t do it.”
Now, at the midpoint of the season, Dieterich’s Warriors are preparing for the district part of their schedule.
“We hadn’t had a whole bunch of looks at any of our district opponents, so I don’t know much about them,” Dieterich said.
While he does not know much what district holds, Dieterich knows what this time of the season means. “Everybody is kind of jockeying for position, and this is about the time where people start honing in on where they are and finding out what kind of team they have,” he said.
Dieterich was hoping he use the game against Westlake as the final barometer to see what kind of team he has going into district.
The district slate of the schedule opens tomorrow with Oakdale, (3-1), returning to the road with a game against DeQuincy.
“We’re in three seasons,” Dieterich expressed. “The first part is over, and now we begin district with the third season being the playoffs. Season one is gone, and we’re starting 0-0 like everybody else in district. DeQuincy was favored by everybody as number one or number two in our district. They didn’t do too well against South Beauregard, and I hadn’t heard anything about this week.”
DeQuincy lost last week 43-21 on the road against Leesville.
Dieterich concluded, “They beat us last year, and they’ve got a nice thing going with a lot of kids coming back. Judging preseason and talking with their coaching staff, I know they feel real good about where they were preseason-wise, and I’m sure they have just gotten better and more confident.”
