Feeling confident in the face of injuries were the Kinder Yellow Jacket as they travelled to Opelousas match up against the undefeated Opelousas Catholic Vikings this past Friday night Behind four turnovers, the Kinder Yellow Jackets came up short of carrying a win and lost 41-6.
On their first offensive series, the Yellow Jackets running game was in full display as the freshman Kevon Freeman shined as he broke free for a gain of 25 yards brining the Yellow Jackets deep into Viking territory early in the game. However, the first quarter also saw Hayes Fawcett throw an interception resulting in a turnover that gave Opelousas Catholic the momentum they needed to put points on the board.
With the ball on the Vikings’ own 25-yard line, OC’s quarterback threw a 10-yard touchdown allowing Opelousas Catholic to score for the first time of the night. The point after attempt was no good giving the Vikings a 6-0 lead.
The second quarter opened up with Opelousas Catholic managing to kick a 25-yard field goal with 9:42 left on the clock bringing the score to 9-0.
As the second quarter continued to unfold, so did the Yellow Jacket mistakes. With the ball at its own 37-yard line, and with 3:00 minutes left in the first half, Kinder fumbled the ball for the second time of the night. The second turnover of the game put the Vikings firmly in control of the field. The momentum continued for the Vikings with another touchdown with only 5:58 minutes left in the first half. This increased the score to 16-0.
With the close of the first half near, the Yellow Jackets could not prevent the Vikings from scoring yet again. With 3:01 minutes left, Kinder was in possession of the ball at its own 37-yard line when Hayes Fawcett threw his second interception. This turnover was followed in quick succession with the Vikings scoring another touchdown with only :30 seconds left in the second quarter making the score 24-0 at the halftime break.
As the second half of this game opened up, more of the same that plagued Kinder was witnessed as the Yellow Jackets seemed to be unable to pull it together. On 1st-and-10 and the ball on the Yellow Jackets’ own 30-yard line, Fawcett threw another interception bringing his nightly total to three. This turnover again saw the Vikings able to score another touchdown brining their lead even higher to 31-0.
With 3:36 minutes left in the third quarter facing a 4th-and goal, Kinder’s Jaron Johnson scored the Yellow Jackets’ lone touchdown bringing the score to 31-6.
A 10-yard field goal then put more points on the board in favor of the Vikings. They then added another touchdown with only 1:36 seconds left in the game.
Despite the loss to bring its record to 1-3, Kinder’s head coach Bret Fusilier said his Yellow Jackets are more than ready to face off against 2-2 Lake Charles Prep on the road tomorrow.
