For a few weeks, signs have notified drivers passing through Spot’s Corner, the intersection where U.S. 190 and state Highway 26 meet between Baile and Elton, that a four-way stop sign was coming to the intersection on Monday, September 30.
On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development began the installation process by installing large stop signs, closing the turning lanes on U.S. 190.
Tammy York with DOTD said rumble strips, flags and flashing signs, as well as message boards, have alerted motorists of the changes coming to Spot’s Corner.
The intersection was previously a two-way stop on state Highway 26, which runs north and south. A flashing caution light also exists at the site.
Local authorities from the area have complained about the intersection and number of accidents that occur there each year. On Wednesday, July 31, a fatality occurred at the intersection when a two-vehicle accident was reported. The crash claimed the life of 27-year-old John Russell Venissat V of Gueydan.
Authorities reported the accident occurred when Venisat’s southbound vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a southbound vehicle.
