Last Thursday the Allen Council on Aging, with the assistance of Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert III, hosted the annual Sr. Citizen Day at the Allen Parish Fairgrounds and Civic Center.
This event invites all area nursing homes and senior citizens to enjoy bingo, door prizes, a free meal and a day at the fairgrounds. They also set up booths that provide information to seniors and explain benefits and options that seniors have available to them.
The Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office provided a meal that comprised of pork steaks, dirty rice, beans and a dessert. The APSO team served the meal assisted by the beauty queens from across the parish. After the meal the queens led the group in a line dance and the seniors enjoyed a time of music and fellowship.
The ACOA also recognized State Representative Dorothy Sue Hill as she is preparing to vacate her state seat at the end of the year. The ACOA wanted to thank her for her years of service to the parish and the elderly community. She has assisted in obtaining grants and protecting the funding for the services the council on aging can provide. Pat Jones stated, “a lot of times these elected officials leave office and no one recognizes the work that they do.
She has helped us so much and we just want to say thank you.” They presented Hill with a plaque and flowers as a token of their appreciation.
The fair and fair catalogue were dedicated to Representative Dorothy Sue Hill as well. Hill has been a judge for fair exhibits for many years. She has always been willing to go out of her way to promote and support the fair each year.
Hill is a graduate of Fairview High School. She graduated from McNeese with a degree in Home Economics Education. She took graduate courses at McNeese, USL and LSU. She is the co-owner of T&H Polled Hereford Farms. In 2007 she was elected State Representative of District 32 which includes Allen Parish, part of Beauregard Parish and a small part of Calcasieu Parish.
She has been active in getting grant funding for improvements on and for the Oberlin Fairgrounds and Civic Center.
